Scholarships

Every year in May, the Ricky J. Parisian Memorial Scholarship Foundation presents a scholarship to an Oneonta High School graduating senior. The award follows the student through four years of college provided the student continues to meet scholarship criteria and acceptable performance in her or his educational program.

Scholarship recipients:
 

Marcel Sanchez 2008 *Summer 2008 - began program at MIT
*Fall 2008 - Freshman at MIT
Katie Sullivan 2007 *'07 - '08 year on Slavakia with Rotary Exchange Program and having a wonderful fulfilling time
*Fall 2008 - MA College of Liberal Arts (North Adams) studying in the field of Biology
 Sara Sason 2006 *2008 summer in Dublin, Ireland studying Irish History and interning at the Irish Film Institute
*Fall 2008 Junior year in the School of Management at Boston University
Thomas Vogler 2005 *'05 - '06 year in Italy with Rotary Exchange Program
*3rd year at Bucknell U (Lewisburg, PA)
Genevieve Bernier 2004  *May 2008 - graduated Magna Cum Laude from SUNY Geneseo BA in Sociology
*June 2008 - graduate school at Virginia Commonwealth University (Richmond, VA) for doctorate in Physical Therapy degree: three year program
Malorie Winnie 2003 *Spent '04 - '05 year in Costa Rica through the Rotary Exchange Program
*Junior year at Universidad de Salamanca in Spain with IES program; Ithaca to accept all 15 credits
*May 2008 - Ithaca graduate!  BA in Politics, minor in Spanish
*Took GRE's; will travel to France, England, Barcelona
Alec Macaulay 2002  *Graduated from Cornell magna cum laude; BS in Biology
*August 2006 - medical school begins at Columbia University, College of Physicians and Surgeons in NYC
*Took 1st Boards in June 2008 (did well), doing Rotation
Jack Sienkiewicz 2001 *2005 Graduate of Hartwick; Medical Technology
*Continuing part time for Master's Degree in fall at RIT
*Working for Hartwick College (technology)
Jonathan Hojn 2000 *Graduate of Albany State, magna cum laude
*Spring 2004; Interned in the NY State Assembly
*May 2006 Master's of Public Administration at Rockefeller College (part of U. at Albany)
*Service learning before career path; working for City Year - Philadelphia (Ameri-Corps affiliate) www.cityyear.org 
Michael Curasi 1999 *BA in Sociology & Theater: Geneseo
*NYC pursuing acting career
*May 2005 Moved to Rochester, working with regional stand up comedy theatre (Regional Theatre)
*June 2007 Shipping Dock Unleashed... long-form Chicago-style improv troupe
*June 2008 - now in Park Slope, Brooklyn with fiance, Erica.  Auditioning.  www.michaelcurasi.com 
Caroline Kang 1998 *Graduate of Eastman School of Music: Rochester
*May 2004; Master's of Music degree at Ithaca College
*Jan. 2006 - founding member of Tarab Cello Ensemble & the Madrone String Quartet.  Also teaches music lessons
*Married Ben Wensel (cellist in same ensemble) 09/01/06
*May 2008 - BA in Early Music from the Royal Conservatory of Music in the Hague, the Netherlands
*Continuing on in the Master's program full time
*Played an opera this summer in Aix-en-Provence, France as part of the European Academia of Music
James O' Donnell 1997  *BA in East Asian Studies at Hamilton College
*Lives with wife, Leslie, near Chicago
*son, James (Jamie) celebrated 3rd birthday on April 24th
David Brower 1996 *Master of Business Administration from Johnson & Wales University
*Pursuing PH.D through Capella University in Minnesota
*Teaching courses in hotel management at Delhi
*Owns home in Otego 
Kristin France 1995 *BA in  Biology: Williams College - MA
*PhD in marine science (05/07) from Williams & Mary University (VIMS)
*awarded Thatcher Prize for Excellence at graduation on the basis of scholarship, service, & character.
*working in Rochester at The Nature Conservancy as Senior Conservation Scientist
     

Scholarship Criteria

Criteria for selecting scholarship recipients are based on the student's commitment to and understanding of the local Oneonta community. Ricky J. Parisian Memorial Scholarship recipients

  • Treat all people with respect-are courteous and polite; judge all people on their merits; are tolerant, appreciative and accepting of individual differences.

  • Demonstrate integrity-stand up for their own beliefs of right and wrong, resists social pressure, respects self and are the best that they can be.

  • Are honest-tell the truth, are sincere, do not mislead or withhold information in relationships of trust.

  • Are responsible-think before acting, consider the consequences, are accountable.

  • Are loyal-stand by family, friends, employers, community and country; do not talk about others behind their backs.

  • Keep promises-keep their word and honor their commitments, pay debts and return what is borrowed.

  • Pursue excellence-do their best with what they have, do not quit easily.

  • Are fair-treat all people fairly, are open-minded, listen to others, try to understand what others are saying and feeling.

  • Are kind and caring-show that they care through generosity and compassion, are not selfish or mean.

  • Are good citizens-obey the law and respect authority, volunteer their efforts, protect the environment.

Your participation in and sponsorship of this event enables the foundation to continue the scholarship and, hopefully, increase the awards given.
